    Anyone seen the trailer.

Looks amazing. I like Alex Proyas' style so this should show what he can do with a huge budget.

And the robots look stunning, all transparant and blue.

Best Blockbuster trailer I've seen all year.

And as for Garfield, it's being marketed as a kids movie, not as the sardonic comedy it should've been. It's a shame to see Bill Murray stooped this low.

    Cool

    Anyone seen the trailer.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I have. All I can say is that, judging by the trailer, it seems to have little in common with the Azimov stories from which it derives its title. I'll probably go see it but I'm not expecting much. I fully expect to see a great story sacrificed on the alter of SFX.

Whatever happened to Harlan Ellison's script? Why couldn't they have filmed that?

Yeah I've seen the trailer, and even though the trailer looked better than I expected it to be, I'm not expecting more than a typical summer movie.

Hollywood has corrupted the minds of 'cineasts' like us, we feel bad about blockbusters before even seeing them - which might ruin the actual experience because it might actually be a very good movie.

(which again brings us to the ever old discussion: Saving Private Ryan, pure entertainment or a good film?)

Well, from what I've heard, Aisomov's story is near to unfilmable.

I think all they've kept is the Will Smith character and the Three Rules. I think those are the rules that Robot's must abide too, correct?

I've seen the trailer - it looks shite, sorry.

It might not be but from the trailer it looks like just another boring, no-brain, SFX piece - with Will Smith.

I'm sure Asimov will be turning in his grave.

Laughing Duck - yes the three rules you mention are Asimov's 'Three Rules of Robotics' about robots not harming humans or disobeying orders from humans (unless the order is to harm a human) and to protect themselves (without violating the other two rules).

Thank gawd for BBC-interpretations of scripts!

To me, the trailer looked like a standard murder-mystery (ie; Minority Report) with a slanted version of who the murderer might be. Oh, with set-designs also lifted from Minority Report too.

Gawd, if a robot goes killer on a human, it'll destroy everything Asimov wrote before his death. Flushing his entire literary universe down the fuckin crapper.

Well, from what I've heard, Aisomov's story[sic] is near to unfilmable.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">I, Robot is actually a collection of short stories which Asimov wrote over a period of years and which were then published in one book. Anthologies generally don't do well as movies. However, in 1978 Harlan Ellison wrote a script, which had Asimov's approval, based on the robot stories. It was never filmed because Ellison told a potential producer that he, the producer, "had the intellectual capacity of an artichoke." I'd say this was an accurate accessment but not the way to get a movie made. Pity.

I think all they've kept is the Will Smith character and the Three Rules.
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">If memory serves, Spooner (Will Smith's character) is not in I, Robot. Rather, he is the protagonist of the two "Robot Novels", The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun. Judging from the trailer, the movie is closer to the Robot Novels (particularly The Naked Sun) than to I, Robot. It was in The Naked Sun that Asimov explored the possibility that a robot could disobey the three laws.

The protgagonist of I, Robot was Dr. Susan Calvin. They've kept her.

A check of IMDb reveals that both The Caves of Steel and The Naked Sun have been filmed for British TV.
